New River Gorge in Winter: Your Guide to Relaxation and Adventure in West Virginia

In partnership with WV Tourism and Sweet Retreat Lodge

WHY West Virginia's, New River Gorge National Park is a Winter Dream

The New River Gorge has always been a go-to for adventure seekers and nature lovers, but since it was named the 63rd U.S. National Park, it’s been amazing to watch more people from all over the world come to experience its beauty.

As someone who grew up around West Virginia, seeing visitors embrace the park’s charm and the state’s unique culture has been so rewarding.

Winter in the Gorge is something else entirely. The trails are quieter, the bare trees open up breathtaking views, and the snow-covered paths add a magical touch. Whether you’re hiking, exploring, or simply soaking in the winter vibes, the crisp air makes everything feel fresh and exciting.

Seasonal activities here are more than just adventures—they’re an invitation to slow down, breathe deeply, and connect with the beauty of this place in your own way.

What You'll Find In This Blog

In this blog, I’ll guide you through all the exciting things to do in the New River Gorge during a winter getaway. From iconic hikes and outdoor activities to artsy shopping spots and cozy local eateries, you’ll find everything you need to plan the ultimate winter adventure in West Virginia.

Sweet Retreat Lodge and Event Venue: Your Home Base for Exploring the New River Gorge

Sweet Retreat isn’t just a place to stay—it’s where your New River Gorge adventure begins. With its incredible location, Tama’s warm and welcoming hospitality, and a beautifully landscaped property that transforms the front yard into a stunning wedding space, it’s so much more than just a lodge.

Sweet Retreat wouldn’t be what it is without its owner, Tama, a lifelong local and retired educator. Tama wears many hats: mother, grandmother, nature lover, hiker, skier, and now, business owner. After retiring, Tama decided to channel her love for her home and community into Sweet Retreat Lodge. Her dream was born in the early days of the pandemic, and through hard work and creativity, she’s built a place that’s as welcoming as it is unforgettable.

Exploring the New River Gorge

Covering over 70,000 acres, the park is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts year-round. The iconic New River Gorge Bridge, completed in 1977, is one of the longest single-span arch bridges in the world and stretches an impressive 3,030 feet across the gorge.

At the park’s heart is Fayetteville, voted one of America’s “coolest small towns” filled with local eateries, shops, and a welcoming small-town vibe. It’s the perfect base for exploring the park, especially during the quieter winter months when you can fully appreciate its laid-back charm.

The New River Gorge earned its designation as a national park in 2020, a recognition of its unique geology, rich history, and unmatched recreational opportunities. The park’s elevation to national park status has brought attention to its natural beauty and West Virginia’s culture, drawing visitors from all over the world.

How To Get One-Of-The-Best Views of the New River Gorge

One of the best views of the New River Gorge Bridge is right at the Canyon Rim Visitor Center. Behind the center, a viewing deck offers panoramic views of the bridge and the gorge.

But for an even closer and more iconic look, take the boardwalk down to the lower observation area, just to the right of the Visitor Center.

When I visited at sunset, the normally packed deck was empty, and I had the whole place to myself. It felt surreal watching the sun dip behind the bridge in peaceful silence, something that’s rare during peak seasons.

Let’s talk about the star of the show: the Glade Creek Grist Mill. This historic, picture-perfect mill is even more enchanting in winter, framed by frosted trees and the gentle flow of Glade Creek. It’s one of West Virginia’s most photographed spots for a reason, and while the mill is not open in the winter, you can still enjoy its peaceful beauty and take a rest at one of WV’s iconic swings.

The mill is on the site of one of three waterfalls in the park, and a few steps away you can hike the Old Sewell Trail to Sugar Camp Run Falls and past the oldest log cabins in the park!

Arts, Crafts, and Local Shopping: Exploring Creativity Around the New River Gorge

The New River Gorge area is more than just an outdoor adventure hotspot—it’s also a vibrant hub for arts, crafts, and local shopping. Inspired by West Virginia’s stunning landscapes, the region’s creative community offers unique experiences and treasures you won’t find anywhere else.

Studio B: Art Boutique Wine and Beer Gallery

This cozy gallery in Fayetteville combines two of my favorite things—local art and craft beer (or wine, if that’s more your vibe). Studio B is the perfect spot to relax and browse works created by talented West Virginian artists. The laid-back atmosphere makes it easy to linger, and trust me, you’ll want to take a piece of West Virginia home with you.

Paint Parties at Sweet Retreat

Why just shop for art when you can create your own? Wild Wonderful Paint Parties bring the creative experience to you—right at Sweet Retreat Lodge, or you can find upcoming events at breweries and event centers around the area. Savor the Flavors: Breweries and Eateries Near the New River Gorge

West Virginia’s New River Gorge area isn’t just an outdoor lover’s dream—it’s also a haven for craft beer enthusiasts and foodies. Whether you’re craving a cold pint after a day of adventure or a meal that hits the spot, this region has something for everyone.

Breweries: A Craft Beer Lover’s Paradise

The brewery scene near the New River Gorge is as refreshing as the mountain air. We did a little craft beer tour during my winter getaway to West Virginia, and I can honestly say that every brewery we stopped at was a total vibe.

Stop by Weathered Ground Brewery in Ghent for a laid-back vibe and a lineup of brews inspired by Appalachian culture. Bridge Brew Works in Fayetteville is a local favorite, crafting beers perfect for every season. For something closer to Sweet Retreat Lodge, head to Freefolk Brewery, just eight minutes away in Hico, WV.

I absolutely love the vibe at Southside Junction Tap House in Fayetteville. While it’s not a brewery, they serve a great selection of local craft beers, and their food is fantastic. What I love most about Southside Junction is the constant buzz of activity. Whether it’s transforming into a pop-up holiday bar, hosting live bands, comedy shows, or other events, there’s always something fun happening!

Looking for a safe and hassle-free way to explore these breweries? BlueJacket Off Road offers guided brewery tours, so you can enjoy the experience without worrying about driving. Even better, if you’re staying at Sweet Retreat Lodge, you can arrange for pick-up and drop-off services right at your doorstep—just let your host Tama know to make it happen!

Food That Hits the Spot

When hunger strikes, the New River Gorge area serves up a delicious array of dining options. Indulge in gourmet pizzas at Pies & Pints, or grab a hearty sandwich at the Secret Sandwich Society. Stop by The Take Out & The Stache for comfort food with a twist, or enjoy the casual vibe at The Brew Garden at Water Stone. For a more upscale experience, check out Maggie’s Pub or sneak into Rosa’s Speakeasy for a fun, prohibition-era feel. Don’t forget local classics like Cathedral Cafe, Gran Robbie’s, and the iconic Tudor’s Biscuit World—because no trip to West Virginia is complete without a biscuit or two.

Arts ‘N “Crafts” Winter Weekends at Sweet Retreat

Tama loves nothing more than helping guests create personalized getaways. She loves her home state, and particularly the New River area. You’ll see this reflected at Sweet Retreat, where local art and other mementos celebrate all things West Virginia. She hopes to educate visitors about the hidden gems, its history, and the wonders it reveals in every season.

This sentiment, along with her sense of humor,  led to the creation of Sweet Retreat’s winter getaway package– Arts ‘N “Crafts” for the over 21 crowd!  (the “crafts” are local craft beers!)  She teamed up with many of the businesses in this article, including Studio B, Wild, Wonderful Paint Parties (See Below) and Blue Jacket Off Road, to create this unique getaway! An Arts ‘N “Crafts” Weekend is effortless and an authentically West Virginia experience!
