Hidden deep in the Eastern Sierra mountain range, Iva Bell Hot Springs beckon with over six natural pools boasting breathtaking vistas of the Sierra Nevadas.Â
While the scenery and soothing waters are a definite draw, reaching these hot springs requires serious preparation and stamina.Â
The Easiest Route - Fish Creek Trailhead
There are a couple of routes to access Iva Bell Hot Springs, with the “easiest” being via the Fish Creek trailhead in the Ansel Adams Wilderness Area near Mammoth, California. However, be prepared for a challenging +25 mile roundtrip hike, involving a demanding 4,000 feet elevation gain. Backpacking in is a must, as it’s too lengthy for a single day.
Even for seasoned hikers, this trek is intense and best spread over two or three days. The Fish Creek trail treats you to spectacular scenery, starting with gradual switchbacks through Aspen forests, creek crossings, and breathtaking views of hidden waterfalls. Take a break by cooling off in the small swimming holes atop the falls, mindful of water currents. Descending further into the valley, you’ll eventually ascend toward the hot springs.
Once at the trail’s end, navigating to the hot springs involves following paths or water trails created by Hot Creek. Pools are scattered across the mountainside, so utilizing heat maps from apps like AllTrails beforehand can help. Ensure you obtain a wilderness permit, particularly the “Fish Creek” pass, as permits are essential for overnight stays in Ansel Adams and John Muir Wilderness areas and tend to fill up quickly.
Most importantly, embrace the adventure and savor the rarity of exploring one of California’s hidden gems!

You saw two mountain lions?? How did you stay safe?
Also what time of year did you go?
Beautiful post!
We did, but thankfully the mountain lions kept their distance. We went in August 2020. My biggest regret is not staying at the hot springs for at least one more night.
