Conveniently located near the quaint town of Logan, Ohio, it’s easily reachable by car, even in the heart of winter.

Hocking Hills State Park is a standout, offering an unparalleled beauty that captivates visitors year-round.

Hocking Hills Itinerary

Day 1:

Assuming you’ve already checked into your rental, take the morning to just chill. Seriously, there’s no need to beat the crowd or wake up at sunrise—Hocking Hills is a place that shines during the day.

Whether you’ve got one day or a few, these next three hikes are must-dos in Hocking Hills State Park. The best part? They’re all under a mile (to walk to the waterfalls) unless you’re feeling extra adventurous!

Enjoy these famous hiking trails

Old Man's Cave

Old Man’s Cave is hands down the most popular spot in Hocking Hills State Park, and honestly, if you can only hit up one trail, this is the one. Extend your hike and you’ll find epic natural rock formations, a picture-perfect waterfall, and cool landmarks like the Devil’s Bathtub and Sphinx Head along the way.

This trail’s perfect for everyone—from families to casual hikers. Start your adventure at the Upper Falls and explore all the cool sections, like the Upper Gorge, Middle Falls, Lower Falls, and Lower Gorge. It’s a must-see!

The Ash Cave

Old Man’s Cave might be the most famous waterfall trail in Hocking Hills, but the Ash Cave might have been the one that blew me away the most.

It’s a short, scenic hike that’s perfect for families or anyone just wanting a quick summer adventure. The trail is super easy, no obstacles, and only takes about 15 minutes to complete. There is plenty of parking, so you shouldn’t have to worry about getting there early to get a spot. The views of Ash Cave and the surrounding rock formations are totally worth seeing!

Cedar Falls

Cedar Falls is the ultimate summer chill spot in Ohio. This short trail leads through cedar groves to two waterfalls. In warmer weather, it’s perfect for dipping your feet in the water or taking a refreshing swim.

For a longer day hike, you can combine all three waterfalls:

Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, and Old Man’s Cave

  • Distance: 10.3 miles round trip
  • Elevation: +994 ft
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Facilities: None
  • Route: Out & Back

Grab some ice cream at the Hocking Hills General Store

There’s nothing better after a day on-trail then some creamy ice cream. Okay, let me tell you about the Old Man’s Cave General Store. They have +24 different flavors of soft serve and boy is it worth the wait. I highly recommend watermelon. The General Store is one closest places in the park to grab one-off groceries, firewood, and beer.

Sweat it out in a Luxurious Sauna Pod

Next store to the Hocking Hills General Store, you’ll see the Chalets of Hocking Hills. The Chalet’s offer a variety of different accommodation experiences from A-frames, to cabins, to smaller yurts. But they also offer Sauna Pods that are open to the public.

You don’t even have to be a guest at the property! You can enjoy these barrel-shaped, cedar saunas featuring a floor-to-ceiling fish-eye window facing out into the majestic forest. This is a drive-up experience; no hiking is required. Step through the changing chamber to the sauna – hot and waiting!

Hocking Hills - The Mecca of Incredible Accommodations

I said it once, and I’ll say it again. Hocking Hills is the GOAT of amazing rents. They have everything from Treehouses, eco-designs, modern cabins, bungalows with infinity pools, lodges with natural waterfall swimming holes, to A-frames. I come for the waterfalls and the peace of nature, but let’s be honest, I stay for the dreamy rentals.

Day 2:

Coffee Please

For some coffee and breakfast, head over to the Hocking Hills Coffee Emporium. It’s one of the most accessible coffee shops in the park, but outside of that, the coffee is just tasty AF and their breakfast and lunch options are pretty fire as well.

Hiking The Rock House

If you loved yesterday’s hikes, then today is going to be just as awesome.

There’s one trail that’s super unique and stands out from pretty much anywhere else I’ve been—it’s called Rock House. The hike from the parking lot to Rock House is quick, but if you’re up for it, you can loop back around for some extra steps and even more views. Honestly, every hike I’ve mentioned in Hocking Hills is a must-do, but Rock House? That one’s gotta be on your list!

Hiking Through Conkle's Hollow Preserve

If you’re up for a bit more adventure, Conkle’s Hollow Preserve is a must-do. The bottom trail takes you through a lush forest, leading you to yet another stunning waterfall—definitely worth it. But if you want to switch things up and get a different perspective, take the upper cliff trail. You’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the area. It’s a great way to mix things up, especially since most hikes around here keep you down in the caves. This one’s all about those top-down views!

Food Options Around Hocking Hills

The one downside to Hocking Hills? You’ve gotta travel a bit for food and supplies. There are a few convenience stores in the park, but if you’re craving a sit-down meal, plan on driving 15-20 minutes to Logan or one of the nearby towns.

Day 3:

Chapel Cave

Alright, here’s the deal. This trail? It’s kinda nasty, haha. Unless you’re a horse, there’s literally no reason to mess with the back side of it (miles 1-3). Airplane Rock? Meh, it’s okay but definitely not mind-blowing. But Chapel Cave? Now, that’s worth it, so here’s my take…

Start this hike clockwise. When you leave the parking lot and head down the hill, you’ll hit a Y. Go left. The cave is maybe a half-mile from there. Stick to the orange-marked trail because it’s way too easy to wander off course.

If you’re up for more, go for it. There’s a nice creek and a wide cave a little further, but honestly, I wouldn’t bother with the full loop.

Lake Logan

Although I haven’t had the chance to spend a day at Lake Logan myself, it’s definitely worth considering as a great spot to hang out and enjoy the outdoors.

If you’re heading to the lake, here’s what you need to know: You can bring your boat as long as it’s got a motor under 10 horsepower—just keep it under 10 mph. Sailboating is also a thing here. You can rent tie-ups at the park office or snag a spot at one of the picnic areas, which also have boat ramps for easy access.

If you’re into fishing, the lake is loaded with bluegill, crappie, bass, and more. Don’t forget your Ohio fishing license!

And when you’re ready to cool off, hit the 527-foot public swimming beach on the north shore.

Hocking Hills Winery and Distillery

Hocking Hills Winery is a chill spot where you can kick back with friends and family, sipping on quality, family-made wine that’s crafted to stand the test of time.
